Prerequisites: Laura's Fine Point Level 1 course, another Level 1/2 Oxford Fine Point Punch Needle Course, OR have familiarity with the proper use of the Fine Oxford Punch Needles.

Ready to add to your Oxford fine point punch needle rug hooking skills? This Level 3 course in a cheerful Hummingbird theme will add to your foundation skills with new twists including stretching the backing on a gripper frame (not included in kit), punching with two different sized Oxford Punch Needles- the #14 Fine and #13 Fine, stem stitch, finessed borders, finer outlines, creative backgrounds, and two versions of fold forward finishes (crochet and whipped edge). Explore embossed, raised effects while adding to your skillset in punch needle rug hooking!

This course is designed for students who have taken Laura’s beginner level 1/2 course, or any other Oxford fine point beginner punch needle course, but if you have other previous experience please reach out to see if this project is a good fit for you.

ORHS classes are recorded as a courtesy to its students by the ORHS and its instructors, and the recording will be made available to course participants for 30 days after the course. This allows you to review the lesson, or to catch up should you miss a class.

For this course you will need:

The Hummingbird Kit which must be purchased directly from the instructor for $95 plus shipping (includes pattern on monks cloth, all the beautiful fine weight yarns to complete your rug, and digital access to pre-recorded tutorials and photo essays). Laura will reach out to registered students well before the start of class to arrange payment and shipment of kits.

You will also need:
- #14 and #13 Fine Regular Punch Needle
- Gripper frame, minimum 14” up to 18” in size recommended
- Frame Cover (optional)
- Small sharp point scissors

Additional supplies you should have on hand for finishing your rug:
- A large eye craft needle for hemming
- Iron, and damp towels for pressing
- Ruler, scissors, and black sharpie marker

This is the second project in the beautiful bird series, designed and taught by expert instructor Laura Berlage, however you don't need to take the classes in order! Jump in to start your punch needle adventures! No previous experience is necessary.

Laura Berlage is a contemporary Renaissance woman living and working on her family’s century-old homestead farm outside Hayward, WI. From fiber arts to creative writing, music to storytelling, she never tires of the magic of transforming ideas into form and overlapping narrative and visual. Laura also loves working with the many and beautiful natural materials from her farm—especially the wool from her sheep. Completing her MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts at Goddard College in 2011, Laura continues her lifelong passion for learning with engaged, hands-on teaching for small groups to encourage creativity, imagination, and expression. In 2015, Laura added punch needle rug hooking to her repertoire and completed her Oxford Instructor Certification in 2023. Showings include Sauder Village’s Rug Hooking Week, and her piece “Trout and Swallows” is featured in Amy Oxford’s book Punch Needle Rug Hooking.
