The "Learn to Punch!" Beginner Punch Needle Course is the perfect introduction to this fun and relaxing craft while using the #10 Regular Point Oxford Punch Needle!
Designed for complete beginners or those wanting a refresher, the course guides you through all the essential basics in a supportive environment. You will learn about the tools and materials, proper technique, stitch size, row spacing, how to punch both straight lines and curves and more. Your instructor will even cover finishing and how to clean up your project so the front looks as beautiful as the back!
With a variety of beautiful kit options to choose from, and step-by-step instruction from Advanced Oxford Instructor Jean Orchard, you will create a project that can be used to decorate your table, as a wall hanging, or pillow front, while building the confidence and skills needed to continue creating on your own. This course offers a fun and approachable way to get started with the satisfying craft of punch needle rug hooking.
ORHS classes are recorded as a courtesy to its students by the ORHS and its instructors, and the recording will be made available to course participants for 30 days after the course. This allows you to review the lesson, or to catch up should you miss a class.

Jean Drevdahl Orchard
Advanced Oxford Instructor Jean Drevdahl Orchard practices a “High Fiber Diet”, just not in the way doctors intended! Jean started sewing and embroidering at age seven and went on to master drawn thread, pulled thread, miniature punch needle embroidery, and Hardanger. Soon, she was teaching these techniques locally, nationally, and internationally. Jean’s fiber skills were recognized when she was one of 50 in the US to design and stitch an ornament for the White House Christmas tree.
When Jean discovered Punch Needle Rug Hooking it had a gripping effect. She became an Oxford Certified Instructor in 2022, has been teaching punch needle virtually and in person since 2020, and is building a supportive and encouraging community of punchers
Having her Ph.D. in Public Health and a Master’s of Science in Teaching made it natural for Jean to teach the technical side of these arts in a simple, step-by-step, and easy to understand way. Nothing fulfills her more than encouraging her students; seeing their joy as they grasp the concepts and complete their projects.
PATRICIA LAWRENCE SCHOLARSHIP- For Beginner Students
This Scholarship was established to honor Patricia Lawrence, a dedicated rug maker and punch needle instructor.
Value: This Scholarship includes $135 towards registration for a beginner student in an Oxford beginner class along with a $100 Oxford company gift card. There are a limited number of scholarships awarded each year.
