Course Description:

This beginner friendly class has a fun-to-punch dolphin mug rug designed to maximize detail in small spaces with the #10 Regular Point Oxford Punch Needle. Learn to use beautiful Violet Jane variegated colors to create the illusion of sunlight dancing across the form of the dolphin and fishes. We'll cover outlining and filling in with a Regular Point Oxford Punch Needle, stem stitch, plus finishing with a whip stitch. No previous experience is necessary to join in the fun!

For this course you will need:

The Sun Shower Dolphin Kit ($35 US) which is not included in the registration fee and must be purchased directly from the instructor. Taryn will reach out to registered students before the start of class to arrange payment and shipment of kits. This kit includes enough premium Violet Jane yarn to complete the project, traced pattern on 15” x 15” monk’s cloth, hemming needle, PDF Step-By-Step Instructions.

Additional Supplies required:

Oxford 10x10 gripper frame and cover
Small sharp pointed scissors
Stitch gauge (included with all new Oxford Punch Needle)
#10 Regular Point Oxford Punch Needle
Fabric scissors (for cutting cloth when finishing)
Iron and damp cloth for steam pressing.

Taryn Kail is a Punch Needle Rug Hooking artist, pattern designer, and Oxford Certified Punch Needle Instructor who lives in Helotes, Texas. Her art focuses on the local flora and fauna of the Texas Hill Country depicted in 100% wool rug yarn on monk’s cloth or primitive linen. Taryn has taught local classes for beginner and intermediate punch needle rug hooking and has conducted rug finishing and hemming workshops. Her classes often focus on small projects with big impact and are designed to highlight innovative concepts in punch needle techniques and finishes.

Taryn is active in her local Fiber Arts community and is Vice Chair for the Oxford Punch Needle Instructor’s Guild and the Communication Committee Chair as well.

Her work is currently on display at Helotes Gallery, and she has most recently participated in exhibits for ATHA (The Association of Traditional Hooking Artists), OPNIG (The Oxford Punch Needle Instructor’s Guild). In 2024 / 2025 she will show work locally at the Grey Forest Open Studio, The Sheepwalk Ranch Winterfest, Texas Wool Week and the Bandera Fiber Festival.

Taryn has been a Certified Oxford Instructor since 2023 and seeks to bring the same classroom experience and standards of craftsmanship found at The Oxford Rug Hooking School to her own students.
