Course Description:

Take a safari through your collection of Fine Point Oxford Punch Needle sizes to create this fun and easy project featuring a textured coaster-sized LION who's ready to ROAR!

This beginner-friendly class will start with a review of the basic skills needed to complete the project including threading your punch needle, starting and stopping, and properly spacing your rows. If you don’t have a full set of the Fine Point Oxford Punch Needles, you can create the project with just one or two sizes with a #13 Fine and a #10 Fine being the best. The class will conclude with an easy no-sew finishing technique that you can use for many more projects.

The Lion is the second in this years Safari Series- be sure to sign up for the rest of the series- Rabbit, Flamingo, Otter- to collect them all!

No previous experience is necessary to join in the Safari adventure!

ORHS classes are recorded as a courtesy to its students by the ORHS and its instructors, and the recording will be made available to course participants for 30 days after the course. This allows you to review the lesson, or to catch up should you miss a class.

For this course you will need:

The LION Kit ($35 US) which must be purchased directly from the instructor. Kit includes yarn, pattern stencil, wood frame with adhesive, Nylon strap and metal clasp for making bag charms or ornament out of your coaster, PDF Step-By-Step Instructions.

Taryn will reach out to registered students well before the start of class to arrange payment and shipment of kits.

Additional supplies need:

Monks Cloth to fit your gripper frame
Oxford Punch Needles #13 Fine, #10 Fine
Also #14 Fine, #8 Fine or #9 Fine which are optional
Gripper frame- 6" is ideal, but other sizes are okay to use
Frame Cover (optional)
Small sharp point scissors
Fabric scissors (for cutting cloth when finishing.
Iron and damp cloth for steam pressing.

Taryn Kail is a Punch Needle Rug Hooking artist, pattern designer, and Oxford Certified Punch Needle Instructor who lives in Helotes, Texas. Her art focuses on the local flora and fauna of the Texas Hill Country depicted in 100% wool rug yarn on monk’s cloth or primitive linen. Taryn has taught local classes for beginner and intermediate punch needle rug hooking and has conducted rug finishing and hemming workshops. Her classes often focus on small projects with big impact and are designed to highlight innovative concepts in punch needle techniques and finishes.

Taryn is active in her local Fiber Arts community and is Vice Chair for the Oxford Punch Needle Instructor’s Guild and the Communication Committee Chair as well.

Her work is currently on display at Helotes Gallery, and she has most recently participated in exhibits for ATHA (The Association of Traditional Hooking Artists), OPNIG (The Oxford Punch Needle Instructor’s Guild). In 2024 / 2025 she will show work locally at the Grey Forest Open Studio, The Sheepwalk Ranch Winterfest, Texas Wool Week and the Bandera Fiber Festival.

Taryn has been a Certified Oxford Instructor since 2023 and seeks to bring the same classroom experience and standards of craftsmanship found at The Oxford Rug Hooking School to her own students.
