For this course you will need: The Lion Kit which must be purchased directly from the instructor for $55, which includes U.S. shipping *, 4 worsted weight mini yarn skeins, 4” coaster ‘frame’ for finishing, two 3” wood rounds, two 2” round glue discs, a marker, cloth ribbon, tracing template, mini roll of masking tape, and digital course notes.Taryn will reach out to registered students well before the start of class to arrange payment and shipment of kits.You will also need: - Monks Cloth to fit your gripper frame- Oxford Punch Needles #14 Fine, #13 Fine, #10 Fine- Also #8 Fine or #9 Fine which are optional- Gripper frame- 6" is ideal, but other sizes are okay to use too- Frame Cover (optional)- Small sharp point scissors for snipping yarnAdditional supplies you should have on hand for finishing your rug: - Fabric scissors (for cutting cloth)- Iron and damp cloth for pressing.*Those outside of the continental United States may have additional shipping fees for their kits. Take a safari through your collection of Fine Oxford Punch Needle sizes to create this fun and easy lion head project. This beginner-friendly class will start with a review of the basic skills needed to complete the project including threading the punch needle, starting and stopping, and properly spacing of your rows with fine yarns. If you don’t have a full set of punch needles, you can use just one or two sizes. A #13 Fine and a #10 Fine work best for this project. We’ll move ahead step-by-step to create our punch needle lions with 3-4 different yarn heights. The dimensions we create will be pressed to provide a more natural look to the lion’s features and some depth to his majestic mane. Our class will conclude with an easy no-sew finishing technique that you can use for many more projects. This is the first project in Taryn's punch needle Safari collection! No previous experience is necessary to join in the Safari adventure. ORHS classes are recorded as a courtesy to its students by the ORHS and its instructors, and the recording will be made available to course participants for 30 days after the course. Taryn Kail is a Punch Needle Rug Hooking artist, pattern designer, and Oxford Certified Punch Needle Instructor who lives in Helotes, Texas. Her art focuses on the local flora and fauna of the Texas Hill Country depicted in 100% wool rug yarn on monk’s cloth or primitive linen. Taryn has taught local classes for beginner and intermediate punch needle rug hooking and has conducted rug finishing and hemming workshops. Her classes often focus on small projects with big impact and are designed to highlight innovative concepts in punch needle techniques and finishes.Taryn is active in her local Fiber Arts community and is Vice Chair for the Oxford Punch Needle Instructor’s Guild and the Communication Committee Chair as well.Her work is currently on display at Helotes Gallery, and she has most recently participated in exhibits for ATHA (The Association of Traditional Hooking Artists), OPNIG (The Oxford Punch Needle Instructor’s Guild). In 2024 / 2025 she will show work locally at the Grey Forest Open Studio, The Sheepwalk Ranch Winterfest, Texas Wool Week and the Bandera Fiber Festival.Taryn has been a Certified Oxford Instructor since 2023 and seeks to bring the same classroom experience and standards of craftsmanship found at The Oxford Rug Hooking School to her own students.
