FAQ's
1. What is a punch needle?
A punch needle is a fiber art tool used to create textured loops of yarn through fabric. The Oxford Punch Needle is designed with a comfortable wooden handle and open-channeled metal tip that allows yarn to glide smoothly through the fabric as you punch. The result is a surface of wool loops that can be used for rugs, wall art, pillows, and other amazing projects.
2. How do you thread an Oxford Punch Needle?
Threading an Oxford Punch Needle is simple and beginner-friendly! Oxford Punch Needles feature a unique open-slot design, making threading quick and easy without the need for complicated threading tools.
To thread, simply insert the yarn through the eye of the needle tip, pulling a long tale. With the pre-threaded yarn aligned along the channel, pull backward making the yarn pop right down into the wooden handle. Check that the yarn flows freely when pulled back and forth, then adjust the yarn so that only a short tail, about ¼ inch, extends from the needle tip. Amy Oxford also offers free video tutorials that demonstrate the process step by step.
3. How do you start punching?
To begin punch needle rug hooking, stretch your monk’s cloth tightly on a gripper frame or hoop. If your design is not already on the cloth, transfer it, then thread your punch needle and you’re all set to start punching loops into the foundation fabric.
Hold the needle like a pencil with the channel facing the direction you are punching. Ensure you punch all the way down until the wooden handle meets the fabric. As you make each stitch, do not lift the needle tip high; instead, glide it close to the surface of the monk’s cloth. Beginners are encouraged to start with simple patterns and practice stitch lengths and row spacing before moving to more detailed designs.

4. Which Oxford Punch Needle size is best for beginners?
For most beginners, the #10 Regular Point Oxford Punch Needle is a popular starting choice because it works well with bulky rug yarn and creates beautiful textured loops quickly and easily. If you prefer finer details or lighter weight yarns, a Fine Point Oxford Punch Needle may be a good fit, with the #13 Fine being a common choice. In general, the best punch needle choice will depend on the yarn weight, project style, desired loop height and overall look you are going for. Amy Oxford’s tutorials and size guides can help you choose the right punch needle for your project goals.
5. What do I need to get started?
To start punch needle rug hooking, you will need:
• An Oxford Punch Needle
• Monk’s cloth
• Yarn that matches your needle size
• A gripper frame or non-slip hoop
• Scissors
• A pattern or simple design
Many beginners also find video tutorials and starter kits helpful for learning basic techniques and avoiding common mistakes.
6. What's the difference between Regular Point and Fine Point Oxford Punch Needles?
The needle width determines which yarn you use. Regular Point Oxford Punch Needles work with bulky and rug-weight yarns, fabric strips, or multiple strands of yarn– creating bold, luscious loops perfect for rugs, chair pads, and statement wall hangings.
Fine Point Oxford Punch Needles pair with worsted-weight, aran, sock, or even multi strands of tapestry yarns, producing finer, more detailed loops ideal for intricate motifs, wall art, and decorative pieces where definition matters. Think of Regular as your wide paintbrush and Fine as your detail brush — both are brilliant, just built for different jobs.
7. What is the difference between Natural and Symfonie Wood Oxford Punch Needle handles?
Both Natural and Symfonie Wood punch needles use the same electro-polished stainless steel needle tip and deliver the same punching performance; the difference is purely in the handle material and price. Natural Wood handles are made from smooth maple and priced at $35 per punch needle. Symfonie Wood handles are crafted from color-impregnated birch, making each one uniquely patterned with beautiful variations in grain and hue, priced at $45 per punch needle.
Both are ergonomically designed to reduce hand fatigue during long punching sessions. If you want a functional workhorse, go Natural. If you want a needle that's also a little piece of art, Symfonie is the one to go for!
8. What do the Numbers on Oxford Punch Needles mean?
Standard Oxford Punch Needles are numbered 8 through 14. The number corresponds to loop height; the lower the number, the taller the loop. A #8 in Regular point or Fine point creates an approximately ½" (13mm) loop; a #14 Fine creates a tiny loop about ⅛" (3mm) in height.
The #10 Regular Point Oxford Punch Needle is a classic beginner pick; it is great for rug yarn, creates satisfying ¼” (6mm) loops, and works for a wide range of projects from coasters to full rugs. Regular Point sizes (#8, #9, #10) use bulky yarn.
The #13 or #14 Fine Point Oxford Punch Needles are popular for highly detailed projects, and their short pile is perfect for coasters, wearables, table mats and more. All Fine Point sizes (#8, #9, #10, #13 and #14 Fine) use fine, aran, and worsted weight yarn, or even multiple strands of very thin yarns.
Again, here are the numbers and the approximate loop heights they create: #8 Regular/Fine creates ½" (13mm) loops, #9 creates ⅜" (10mm), #10 creates ¼" (6mm), #13 Fine creates ³⁄₁₆" (5mm), and #14 Fine creates ⅛" (3mm) loops.
9. Should I buy a single Oxford Punch Needle or a complete set?
If you're a beginner, start with a single needle — the #10 Regular Point is the most recommended first tool and costs $35. It pairs perfectly with rug yarn and handles most beginner projects beautifully. Once you know you love the craft (and you will), sets make more sense. The Regular Point Set ($110–$140) includes all three Regular Point sizes; the Fine Point Set ($160–$205) includes all five Fine Point sizes; and the Complete Set ($225–$290) contains all eight.
Sets come in sturdy zippered cotton tool cases with pockets for scissors and a stitch gauge. The case folds open to become a nifty stand for your set- they are genuinely handy for anyone who punches regularly!
10. How do I choose the right Oxford Punch Needle for my project?
Two questions narrow it down fast: What yarn are you using, and how detailed is your design? For rug yarn or bulky yarn, choose a Regular Point. For fine, aran, or worsted weight yarns, choose a Fine Point. Then pick a number based on how tall you want your loops to be; a lower number means taller pile. Beginners working on their first rug or wall hanging with Violet Jane Rug Yarn should reach for the #10 Regular. Starting a project requiring a lot of detail? The #13 Fine or #14 Fine Point Oxford Punch Needles are a great choice. Still unsure? The Oxford Punch Needle Sizes Guide on the blog walks through every size with project examples.
11. What projects can I make with Oxford Punch Needles?
The short answer: pretty much anything textile! Oxford Punch Needles are used for floor rugs, chair pads, pillows, wall hangings, table runners, coasters, tote bags, framed art, and even apparel or embellishments. Regular Point punch needles excel at bold, chunky home decor pieces including rugs; Fine Point punch needles shine on detailed wall art and accessories. 12. What is the difference between traditional rug hooking and punch needle rug hooking?
Traditional rug hooking typically uses a rug hook, similar to a crochet hook, to pull loops of cut strips of fiber or yarn up through a foundation backing. It is a two-handed operation- one hand holds the fiber in the required location underneath the frame and backing, while the other uses the hook to pull loops up to the surface. The finished surface faces up.
Punch needle rug hooking works in the opposite direction, with the punch needle tool pushing (or should we say punching) the loops of yarn or fibre down through the foundation back. The finished surface faces down, and the ‘back’ of the project is what the person punching sees as they punch.
Both methods can be combined in projects- just remember to have your pattern on both sides of the foundation backing and to flip your project each time you switch between punching or hooking. Many rug hookers use the Oxford Punch Needle to fill in large background areas quickly, and the materials used are usually compatible with both methods of rug hooking.
13. Why won't my punch needle loops stay in the fabric?
If you have the correct tools and materials, loops falling out almost always trace back to one of five causes: fabric tension too loose (monk's cloth must be drum-tight on the frame), yarn and needle size mismatched (too thin or thick for the needle width), lifting the needle too high as you punch, not punching all the way down into the fabric, or tension on the yarn (often from it snagging on the frame or your arm as you punch).
