OPEN WORKSHOP

Instructors: Advanced Oxford Instructor Heidi Whipple and The Oxford Team

Course Description:

Treat yourself to a relaxed and inspiring open workshop retreat while studying the creative art of punch needle rug hooking!

Instruction will be geared towards the needs of each student with a special emphasis on improving workmanship and/or punching techniques. Work on the project of your choice with experienced instructors available for support, consultation and guidance. You can start a brand new piece or bring in one you have already begun.

Instructors will reach out prior to the start of the retreat to find out your project plans so they are well prepared to help you reach your goals! Your rug hooking skills will flourish with lots of individual attention and the ability to also learn from each other.

Level: Open to all!

Material Fee: No specific material fees.

About Heidi:

Heidi Whipple started working at The Oxford Company in 2009 by assembling Oxford Punch Needles. She took a lesson from Amy in 2010 to learn about punch needle rug hooking and fell in love with the craft. Heidi punched many rugs and wall hangings over the next three years and received her Oxford Instructor Certification in 2013. Heidi learned to dye yarn under the guidance of Sara Burghoff, the founder of Violet Jane. When The Oxford Company purchased Violet Jane in 2014, Heidi began dyeing Violet Jane for our many customers and students. In 2015, she took a four-day intensive dye workshop at The Pro Chemical & Dye Company to further her dyeing knowledge. In addition to teaching punch needle rug hooking and yarn dyeing, Heidi is the general manager of The Oxford Company. Her desire to help others in all aspects of life makes teaching a special joy for her, especially to see others enjoy and feel proud of their accomplishments.

THE ABC’s OF FINISHING

Instructor: Judith Hotchkiss

Course Description:

The feedback forms were astoundingly clear- you wanted Judith back and we were happy to listen!

Tired of finishing your rugs the same old way? Do you love punching but procrastinate when it comes to finishing? It is often said that the finished edge can make or break a rug, but what does that mean?

Judith’s ABCs of Finishing workshop is designed to inspire and expand your ideas on how to finish your punched mats while still maintaining a technically sound edge. She has 26 special finishes to share with you, one for each letter of the alphabet! You’ll enjoy hands-on practice on small samples covering many of them and the rest will be covered in discussion, as there won’t be time to try every single one. The small samples will be provided by Judith, and students are also encouraged to bring any unfinished projects they have to work on as well.

The Goal is for you to leave with enthusiasm for the finishing stage and an alphabet full of new ideas to apply to future projects.

Level: Practiced Beginner to Advanced

Material Fee: $40 USD which includes materials needed for the class (Paid directly to Judith at Loops)

About Judith:

Judith Hotchkiss grew up in a hooking household and watched her mother and older sister punch beautiful rugs. As a young girl, her mother often let her choose colors and practice punching on her big floor frame. Now Judith is an Oxford Certified Instructor, as well as McGown certified to teach traditional rug hooking, and she loves to teach the art to others. She produces her own line of hand-dyed wool and yarn, specializing in multi-value swatch dyeing as well as one-of-a-kind spot dyed skeins. Judith and her husband have recently relocated to Rutland, Vermont where they are working on creating a new home studio for workshops and classes.

SHORT STORY SHEEP – PUNCH NEEDLE DOLL (SHEEP) HOUSE!

Instructor: Rebecca Martin

Course Description:

Who doesn’t want to create a miniature punch needle world for a darling sheep? Rebecca Martin is bringing her absolutely adorable and original miniature sheep world to share with you at Loops!

Pack your fine needles and your spirit of whimsy and join in 'Short Story Sheep' for a relaxing and engaging class that explores all the ways we can use our Oxford fine needles to make a project come to life.

Choose between the Spring or Summer themed room design that fits inside a little suitcase sheep 'house'. The backdrop that you make is attached with Velcro, so you can create other seasonal looks for your sheep in the future. You’ll also have the opportunity in class to make tiny furniture and accessories, and basic sewing skills are all you need.

Seasonal gardens and a special surprise backdrop will also be available after class!

Level: Intermediate to Advanced

Material Fee: $115 -includes white suitcase for your sheep house, fair trade needle felted sheep in a blue dress, pattern on monk’s cloth, yarn to complete the backdrop and area rug, assorted accessories, and supplies to make basic furniture. Material Fee is payable directly to Rebecca.

About Rebecca:

Rebecca Martin is a passionate fiber artist and educator based in Longmont, Colorado. Her studio is filled with all things wool, however punch needle rug hooking takes center stage. Rebecca's creative work and articles have been published in Rug Hooking Magazine and the ATHA magazine. She teaches locally and online and has taught at both the ATHA biennial and Sauder Village Rug Week. Online lectures for guilds and Rug Hooking Magazine have been an enjoyable way for her to expand her teaching. When not hooking, teaching, or writing, Rebecca can be found hovering over her dye pots, creating rug yarn for her company StoryTeller Wool.

TILE-RRIFIC FUN

Instructor: Jean Drevdahl Orchard

Course Description:

Discover the joy of creating a stunning 14" punched tile design, complete with a three-dimensional sculptural effect!

This welcoming, beginner-friendly course invites you to slow down, play with color and texture, and immerse yourself in the soothing rhythm of punch needle rug hooking. You’ll get experience with a variety of punch-needle sizes, the chance to explore the unique qualities of both rug yarn and fine yarn, learn to achieve the correct gauge, practice sculpting, stem stitch, and more.

We’ll ease into the week with a little bit of practice to help you build confidence and familiarity with the tools and concepts. Then you’ll start on your tile project. With some beautifully curated color palettes featuring luxurious Violet Jane yarns to select from; choosing your favorite may be the hardest part!

Throughout the week, you'll learn about the use of color values, creating an embossed, three dimensional design, plus a demonstration of how to finish your work with a tidy mitered hem. Many will complete their tiles, but even if your tile is still in progress, you'll leave feeling empowered, inspired, and fully equipped to finish it at home with the skills to continue creating long after the class is over.

Level: Beginners to Advanced

Pattern on Monks Cloth $20, Yarn pack for projects- vary between $75 and $85 depending on colorway option chosen. There will be a fabulous variety of individual yarn pack color ways to choose from or select up to four yarn packs to make a multi-colorway project! About Jean:

Jean Drevdahl Orchard practices a “High Fiber Diet”, just not in the way doctors intended! Jean started sewing and embroidering at age seven then went on to master drawn thread, pulled thread, miniature punch needle embroidery, and Hardanger. She became an Oxford Certified Instructor in 2022, and an Advanced Oxford Instructor in 2025. Jean has been teaching punch needle rug hooking virtually and in person since 2020.Having her Ph.D. in Public Health and a Master’s of Science in Teaching made it natural for Jean to teach the technical side of these arts in a simple, step-by-step, and easy to understand way. Nothing fulfills her more than encouraging her students, seeing their joy as they grasp the concepts and complete their projects.

In the unfortunate event that you are unable to attend you may receive a full refund of the registration minus a $75 processing fee if we are notified prior to April 21. (Should this be necessary, we appreciate you letting us know as early possible to give us time to find someone to fill your spot.)From April 21 to May 21 a partial refunded of 50% of the registration fee may be granted. After May 21, 2026 no refunds can be granted.
