Martha Barnes was exposed to the world of rug hooking and punch needle embroidery in 2013. In 2017, she discovered Oxford Punch Needle Rug Making just prior to the needles going viral. Through attendance at conferences, training events, workshops, and practice, she has become accomplished in her arts. Martha is a member of the Rug Hooking Guild of Nova Scotia and the Newfoundland Rug Hooking Guild. She was Vice President of The International Guild of Handhooking Rugmakers (TIGHR) from 2019-2021. Martha participates in a number of groups that meet to hook rugs and socialize; she also teaches at a local business. Martha achieves her greatest satisfaction when she can give all and share her skills and knowledge with those willing to learn. Martha received her Oxford Teacher Certification in 2023 and was the first to do so in Newfoundland.
