2018 Reunion Participants Being Silly2018 Reunion participants (with their true nature showing).

We're happy to be returning to the historic Brandon Inn and will meet again in the bright and cheerful “Garden Room." We’ll have the run of the entire Inn with charming sitting rooms for relaxing and punching and lots of space for a rug display. The individually decorated guest rooms, delicious full country breakfasts, and central village location make The Brandon Inn a perfect spot for our reunion! Those of you who attended in 2018 will remember that all the roads in Brandon were under construction and we're happy to say that construction is complete!

This year’s inspiring keynote speaker is internationally renowned Canadian Oxford Certified Instructor and McGown teacher Ingrid Hieronimus. Some of you will know Ingrid from her terrific dye books, including "Primary Fusion." In addition to her presentation, Ingrid will lead a workshop on how to use a technique she calls "reversible punch needle hooking" to make a two-sided mat that has a different design on each side (very cool)! We will also have a workshop with rug hooking color expert Nancy Jewett from Fluff and Peachy Bean Designs and a moderated panel discussion with veteran Oxford Certified Instructors to explore all aspects of teaching punch needle rug hooking.

Reversible Punch Needle Hooking
Instructor: Ingrid Hieronimus
Materials Fee: $40. This includes the pattern on monk's cloth and all the wool yarn needed to complete the trivet and the finishing. Please pay materials fee directly to Ingrid at the workshop.

In this workshop students will learn how to accomplish reversible punch needle hooking, making a small 8 ½ inch trivet or pot holder. This technique is called the corduroy stitch which is one of the creative stitches used in traditional rug hooking. This technique may be used together with traditional rug hooking and punch needle hooking. Finishing will also be discussed.

Ingrid Hieronimus Mat - One SideIngrid Hieronimus Mat - Other Side
This will be our reversible punch needle hooking project. The piece will have a snowflake on one side and a flower on the other! Can you figure out how Ingrid did it? Come to the reunion to learn her secret!

Supply List
  • Frame to hold 16” square piece of monk’s cloth. A 14” x 14” Oxford Gripper Strip Lap Frame is recommended. (Note that an 18" x 18" will be too big and a 10" x 10" a tight fit!) For more about frames for the reunion please see below.
  • #10 fine Oxford Punch Needle, if you have more than one, bring it with you as this will save time in threading the punches with the different colors.
  • Sharp pointed scissors.
  • All other supplies will be provided by the instructor.

Simple Tools for Mastering Color Planning
Instructor: Nancy Jewett

This is a hands-on workshop with a practical approach to color planning your rugs. We will make Nancy Jewett’s 8” x 10” Funky Leaf pattern. Nancy will teach us to use a couple of color planning tools as we discover the magic of Color Harmonies and other aspects regarding color planning knowledge. Each student will have the same pattern and a choice of a worsted weight yarns in various Hexad Color Harmonies to work with.

Nancy Jewett Funky Leaf

Funky Leaf will be our workshop project. Designed and traditionally hooked with fabric strips by Nancy Jewett.  8” x 10”. Featured in Rug Hooking magazine in 2016. Note that we will punch our mat with a #14 fine Oxford Punch Needle and worsted weight yarn.

Supply List

  • #14 fine Oxford Punch Needle
  • 14” x 14” Oxford Gripper Strip Frame
  • 14” x 14” Oxford Gripper Strip Frame Cover
  • Sharp pointed scissors

Oxford Instructor Judith Hotchkiss will be putting kits together based on Triadic Color Harmonies. Everyone will have the same pattern but there will be different color choices. The kits will consist of 6 worsted weight yarn colors with multiple values of each color available. For background there will be separate choices for each student to pick out.

Due to the size limitations of The Garden Room, we ask that you use 14” x 14” frames only during workshops instead of 18” x 18” or other larger frames. There are several other great spaces to punch during the reunion, including a sunny patio and two sitting rooms.

      Nancy Jewett

Nancy Jewett is a self-taught artist who grew up on a farm in Vermont, surrounded by animals and memorable rugs hooked by her grandmother. She later learned traditional rug hooking from her former mother-in-law and soon began designing her own rugs and dyeing wool. Her designs, which often reflect her fondness for animals and her sense of humor, might include animals having fun, playing musical instruments, or simply being a bit mischievous.

Nancy's passion for color transforms wool into an irresistible palette encircling the color wheel. She is presently working to complete her McGown Teacher Certification and is the owner of Fluff & Peachy Bean Designs in Brandon, Vermont which she founded in 2003. Nancy has a love for teaching color planning, dyeing, and design with an emphasis on borders. She is primarily a traditional rug hooker but also has experience with The Oxford Punch Needle.

Nancy is a frequent contributor to Rug Hooking magazine. She is the current McGown Chairman of Activities and Members-at-Large and also co-hosts the ATHA (Association of Traditional Rug Hooking Artists) Region 1 Hook-In at Westford, Massachusetts, and The Harvest Hook-In in Brewer, Maine. Nancy was the Membership Chair of TIGHR (The International Guild of Hand Hooking Rugmakers) from 2006-2009 and served as ATHA Region 1 Representative from 2009-2015.

There's so much to learn about color! It will be wonderful to learn more about it, not only to enhance our own rugs, but to help our students!
