Introduction to Fine Shading

Levels: Intermediate-Advanced. Must have experience using the #14 fine Mini Oxford Punch Needle.

Learn the art of fine shading with shading expert Diane Moore. You’ll use the #14 fine Mini Oxford Punch and eight values of fine worsted weight yarn to work on the design of your choice. Project options include flowers, fruit, leaves, scrolls, or learn to add shading to any type of pictorial design (such as a McAdoo rug). We’ll use luscious 8-value yarn dyed by Oxford Certified Instructor Judith Hotchkiss. There will be a demonstration of how to dye eight values using the canning jar method and also how to dye yarn for the painterly effect of dip dyeing. How to shade with dip dyed yarns will also be discussed. If you’ve been wanting to try something new and take your work to the next level this is the workshop for you!
Materials Fee: Will vary depending upon project chosen. A supply list will be provided upon registration.
Please note: Because Judith Hotchkiss has such a large palette we won’t be able to provide all of her yarn colors at the school. We’ll have some on hand but students are requested to purchase yarns directly from Judith before class. Diane will consult with you ahead of time to discuss your project and to advise you on color options.
Diane Moore is a third-generation rug hooker. Fine shaded techniques are her specialty using swatches and dip dyed fabrics. She is a McGown certified teacher and enjoys dyeing and hooking. Diane’s hooked pieces and articles have been in Rug Hooking magazine's Celebration of Hand Hooked Rugs, The Association of Traditional Hooking's Art of Rug Hooking magazine, and McGown Newsletters. Her work is featured on the front and back cover of Rug Hooking magazine’s book, A Rug Hooker’s Garden. Her rugs have won viewer’s choice awards at The Green Mountain Rug Hooking Guild's Hooked in the Mountains Rug shows. Diane has taught at schools in the USA and Canada.

In 2012, Green Mountain Rug School offered a traditional fine shading class with Diane and I got permission to take the class as a puncher. (Thank you Diane and Stephanie Allen-Krauss!) I think Diane was as excited as I was! She put a lot of time into helping me translate the technique into yarn and was an excellent teacher. I liked working with her so much that I took her class again in 2013!”
Note that Diane's projects shown here are traditionally hooked with wool strips and you will be using a punch needle and yarn.
