Oxford Punch Needle Instructors Guild

OPNIG Logo

The Oxford Punch Needle Instructors Guild (OPNIG) was founded in 2017 by Oxford Punch Needle Rug Hooking Instructors to support, encourage, inspire, and offer ongoing educational opportunities for Oxford Instructors.

OPNIG hosts quarterly Frame-Side Chat Zoom webinars on a variety of topics of interest to Oxford Instructors. Our presenters are predominantly Oxford Instructors and we enjoy having the opportunity to learn from one another. We are also excited to learn from other punch needle artists and fiber artists. Recent Frame-Side Chat topics include "how to teach remotely," "the healing power of punching," and "all about rug yarn." Oxford Instructors have also discussed their work, presented their projects, and shown us their classrooms and studios. Each Frame-Side Chat allows time for us to go into breakout rooms to get to know each other better and talk about our work in smaller groups.

OPNIG sponsors International Punch Needle Rug Hooking Day (IPNRHD), a day when Oxford Certified Instructors and other punch needle teachers can celebrate the day by offering workshops, get-togethers, hook-ins, and presentations. Experienced punchers are encouraged to work on a project and beginners are encouraged to give it a go! We offer a new specially designed IPNRHD punch needle pattern each year that is available for free download, as a pattern on monk's cloth, or a full kit including all the materials needed to complete the project. In 2021, hundreds of punchers completed the IPNRHD pattern and the pieces were featured on social media. We also partnered with Rug Hooking magazine to offer an online presentation hosted by Oxford Certified Instructor Rebecca Martin showing how to make the pattern. Over 900 people attended from across the globe.

OPNIG also puts out an online newsletter for members, organizes the Biennial Oxford Certified Instructors Reunion, and helps to make Oxford Rug Hooking School scholarships available for beginning punch needle students and those attending Oxford Teacher Certification and Advanced Oxford Teacher Certification.

Our 2021 IPNRHD pattern, Crocus, was designed by Oxford Instructor and IPNRHD Ambassador Rebecca Martin of StoryTeller Wool.
