Teacher's Rugs

Every student who takes the Oxford Punch Needle Rug Hooking Teacher Certification Program is required to design and make a 2' x 3' rug in order to receive their certification. The rug must include at least three of the techniques they learned in class. These include using different sizes of Oxford Punch Needles, punching with rug yarn, fine yarn, novelty yarn, and wool fabric strips, using the Craftsman's Punch Needle to create a three dimensional effect, clipping and sculpting loops, shading, and traditional rug hooking.

Here are our Oxford Instructor's certification rugs for 2015 and 2016. We hope you will enjoy them!

 Judy Conn rug detail.

Judy made this rug as a tribute to her grandfather. Judy says, “The item in the corner (bottom left) is a silver badge cap pin that my grandfather, Thomas Hunter Whittaker, wore on his beret during WWII when he was part of the British Home Guard in Nottingham, England during the blackouts. When the air raid sirens rang in the night and everyone had to go into shelters, he would take to the streets to make sure no lights were on, and that no one was on the streets during the German bombings. He was decorated with a medal of honor during WWI where he fought in France; he rallied many troops out of danger’s way to safety; he himself was very badly injured with shrapnel in his legs which kept him in hospital for many months and hindered his walking for the rest of his life. It did not hinder his spirit however…”

Bob chose some of the alpacas from his farm as the subjects for his rug. The individual busts are actually punched from the fleece of the alpaca itself, adding to the realism.
